Copacabana Palace reopens Antique Casino Ballrooms

September 2006 - After investment of R$10.6 million, Copacabana Palace has reopened its Antique Casino Ballrooms.

The renovation, which started in August 2005, involved hundreds of workers, including a group of 12 architects and engineers and more than 20 restorers. The project was overseen by the French decorator Michel Jouanet who retained the original characteristics as much as possible.

Coves and balusters, as well as the skylight and the entrance hall, have been renovated, in keeping with earlier memories. The ceiling plaster was restored using the same process as was used in the original construction in 1923.

For the chandeliers, five prototypes were made to reach the final result. Each room has three central chandeliers, which were restored from original models. The chandeliers are from 1923, but illumination has modern dimmer systems with a light intensity control program.

The Peroba Mica and Ipê Tobacco wood floor have been totally reproduced from the original one.  On the entrance stairs, the Carrara marble was restored as well as the façade Frejó frames, with special techniques in light with National Historical Patrimony orientations. Following security rules, the building had its structure strengthened to withstand the chandeliers individual weight of 700 kilos.

To support parties and events, the acoustics have been reinforced with special screens, and the windows frames have received 20mm glass reinforcement to meet required standards.  Another necessary action to guarantee the quality of service expected from the Copacabana Palace, was the enlargement of the services structure and installation of weight lifts. The main kitchen has capacity doubled. Direct access from the kitchens to the ballrooms was created, plus some additional storage for equipment.

The woods and columns received special paint to avoid fissures and the roof was painted with special imported paint with thermic protection. During the renovation, the restorers found more than six layers of paint on the walls and columns.

A modern system of detection, aspiration and monitoring of moisture was installed to guarantee the security and comfort for the guests.  The air-conditioning system has capacity of 45 tons of refrigeration in each ballroom.

With a reputation of delivering big memorable events, the Copacabana Palace's enlarged capacity with the Antique Casino Ballrooms paves the way for more special and unforgettable events.
